Parentline Plus is an independent charity offering support to all parents. We offer a range of services to parents. It doesn't matter if your children are babies or grown up adults still living at home - we are here for everyone.

Our services include a 24 hour free (to landlines and most mobile networks)

Every parent will find that at times they struggle. Most of us can call on friends and family, but sometimes parents are afraid to admit they need support, for fear of being labelled a "bad parent". The opposite is actually true. Being able to recognise those times when you do need support is actually a sign of good parenting.

It's not easy being a parent, whatever your circumstances, but some inspiring stories are out there. You can go online and follow the story of Tim Rushby-Smith (www.timrushby-smith.com) and you can see his regular features in the Times newspaper.

If you ever do feel you need that initial support, the people who will answer your call are parents themselves. All call information is treated as confidential and if there is a specific service that we can identify, we make sure we signpost you on to them. Don't hesitate to call if you ever need to.

Have you ever wanted those extra miles so that you won't incur charges?  Well good news for Motability customers as the allowance has been increased by an additional 5,000 miles a year which brings the total up to 60,000 miles for a three-year contract. This now means that drivers will be able to travel further during their three year lease, with a reduced risk of incurring any excess mileage charges.

Finding Ways to a more accessible World

A brand new website was launched at the beginning of August by a North Tyneside business, Finding Ways Ltd.

It provides online information about business within the tourism, hospitality, leisure and retail sectors aimed at helping disabled and elderly people, as well as parents of young children with prams and pushchairs, find the most accessible venues to suit their specific needs.

As well as business providing their own details, the public will be encouraged to submit reviews sharing their experience with others.

There's a social enterprise angle to Finding Ways as a percentage (up to 50%) of the annual business subscription (only£99 + VAT) is donated to charities either associated directly with Finding Ways or nominated by members of the public who nominate businesses to be on the website.

“We are actively seeking partnerships with charities who will promote Finding Ways to mutual benefit”, said Nancy Haughey, Operations Director and Co-founder.  “We are also looking to expand the website internationally and would therefore welcome any associates, business or otherwise, who can help achieve this aim”.

Finding Ways see it as a “win-win-win-win” opportunity:

1.      for disadvantaged people – in finding suitable accessible venues.

2.      for business – in getting additional customers as a result of their investment in making their business more accessible and promoting it through our site

3.      for charities – through fund raising opportunities

4.      for our business associates and ourselves – from the revenue generated from a potentially enormous global business and public database

Began back in 2004 when a group of friends decided to make a film about visual impairment called The Road Ahead. This project then turned into a number of projects where films were made and events were staged. They have worked with Guide Dogs, local authorities and organisations and been supported by Eukanuba, Meriel the Co-op and some very generous people in the Music industry.

The website began as a site for the film, but it is becoming a record of their progress, their products, events along the way and many of the friends they have made.

Learning about DisABILITY………………

An invitation to make a difference.

Wirral Met College, like many other organisations, has just published its 3 year Disability Equality Scheme.  What’s this all about? Quite simply it is about engaging staff, students, potential students and other specialist organisations that are willing to help us to improve things for people with disabilities.

Wirral Met’ piloted a National project last year, specifically concerned with improving things for people who are blind and partially sighted.  This was so successful that another project group is now looking at improvements for those who are deaf or hard of hearing. 

This new project was launched recently with a lovely lunch, prepared and served by students, in the College’s Conway Park Campus, followed by a few hours of discussion and feedback.  This was a bi-lingual event with English and British Sign Language simultaneously used to engage a very enthusiastic audience.

Pictured (left to right) Tom Fletcher and Eve Jones, who are both hard of hearing, study at the College and both benefit from the help of Learning Support Assistants. Eve also uses a  personal ‘T loop’ device,  provided by the College, that she says ‘has made a tremendous difference to my studies and my confidence’. 

Alan Brown, who is partially sighted, has made a real contribution to helping the College to improve things and, as a student himself, Alan also participates in the College’s staff development, to help staff understand the particular difficulties that he and others face.  Alan says ‘Wirral Met is a very supportive organisation and I am only too pleased to contribute to their quest to improve things for disabled students. Many of my suggestions have already been addressed and it has made a real difference to me.’

The College has also hosted a Making a Difference Coffee Morning for disabled people.  Over 70 people attended and provided valuable feedback on the College’s proposed Disability Equality Scheme.  As a result the College was able to publish its Scheme and Action plan by 4^th December 2006.

Wirral Met’s extensive network of support for students includes general help and assistance as well as specialist learning support for students with dyslexia, mental health issues, physical difficulties,  blind and partially sighted, deaf and hard of hearing.

This support makes a real difference to over 1000 staff and students every year and we want to continue to improve our services by asking as many people as possible to help us to continue…………MAKING A DIFFERENCE.

NATIONAL TRUST KITCHEN GARDEN

The Trust's From Plot to Plate ongoing initiative helps to illustrate the world of seasonal produce and the choices that we make when deciding what we eat.

 National Trust Kitchen Garden highlights include:

*          Barrington Court in Somerset - The garden produces a diverse crop, including rhubarb, mini sweet corn and leeks. Produce is principally grown for the National Trust restaurant, Strode House, which has a special seasonal menu reflecting what is flourishing in the garden.

*          Wimpole Hall in Cambridgeshire - the walled garden produces a wide range of vegetables including an amazing 60 varieties of tomato.

*          Customers in the Stableyard Restaurant at Hughenden will enjoy food using seasonal produce from the garden. For further information contact 01494 755537.

*          Clumber Park in Nottinghamshire - visitors will be able to follow the progress of Clumber's growing garden as the garden is extended to occupy all of the four and a half acres of the original Kitchen Garden.  Its walled garden has one of the longest glasshouses owned by the National Trust and this year the herbaceous border will stretch to over 400 feet!  Run along organic principles the garden grows more than 70 varieties of fruit and vegetables, much of which is used in the restaurant or is available for sale.

*          Knightshayes Court in Devon - this unique Victorian walled kitchen garden produces fruit, vegetable and cut flowers.  Fresh produce is supplied direct to the nearby National Trust restaurant.

*          Llanerchaeron in mid Wales has two restored walled gardens, dating back to the 18th century, which produce organic home-grown fruit, vegetables and herbs, some of which are used in the tea room and are available to buy from the visitor centre.
